Author Spotlight: Elana Johnson

We are excited to welcome a number of local authors who will be participating in the Race for Reading. Watch for their name tags and RUN WITH A WRITER! They will also be available to sign books & visit with you after the race. We will introduce them to you here, so you will be ready to meet them on June 9th!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She wishes she could experience her first kiss again, tell the mean girl where to shove it, and have cool superpowers like reading minds and controlling fire. To fulfill her desires, she writes young adult science fiction and fantasy.
Elana Johnson's work, which includes POSSESSION, REGRET, and SURRENDER, is available from Simon & Schuster wherever books are sold. She is the author of From the Query to the Call, an ebook that every writer needs to read before they query, which can be downloaded for free on her website. She runs a personal blog on publishing and is a founding author of the QueryTracker blog. She blogs regularly at The League of Extraordinary Writers, co-organizes WriteOnCon, and is a member of SCBWI, ANWA and LDStorymakers. You can also find her on twitter and Facebook.

About SURRENDERRaine has always been a good girl. She lives by the rules in Freedom. After all, they are her father’s rules: He’s the Director. It’s because of him that Raine is willing to use her talent—a power so dangerous, no one else is allowed to know about it. Not even her roommate, Vi.
All of that changes when Raine falls for Gunner. Raine’s got every reason in the world to stay away from Gunn, but she just can’t. Especially when she discovers his connection to Vi’s boyfriend, Zenn.
Raine has never known anyone as heavily brainwashed as Vi. Raine’s father expects her to spy on Vi and report back to him. But Raine is beginning to wonder what Vi knows that her father is so anxious to keep hidden, and what might happen if she helps Vi remember it. She’s even starting to suspect Vi’s secrets might involve Freedom’s newest prisoner, the rebel Jag Barque….

And a few words about Possession:

“Emotion pumps through every scene of this thriller. Given all the urgency and action, the novel’s ending may surprise readers as the heroic adventure turns into a tragic love story.” –School Library Journal

“An intriguing dystopia…A good choice for fans of Pam Bachorz and Ally Condie.” --Booklist

Elana is donating copies of Possession and Surrender for our prize drawing and to out library. Watch for them!

Thanks Elana!

It's for the children...

In all the fun and chaos of planning and having a race (or races), this is really about the great work that our Literacy Center does for the kids in Saratoga Springs. The kids who receive tutoring are benefited as they progress and build confidence. The youth tutors also benefit as they learn to teach, improve their own skills, and serve others.

I feel blessed to be a part of this program and a part of this great community. Thanks, family, for your help and support!

New Sponsor- Alpine Pediatrics

We are excited to add Alpine Pediatrics to our Gold Medal Sponsors! They have mulitple locations, including here in Saratoga Springs. Thanks for supporting the Literacy Center!

Author Spotlight: Fay Klingler

We are excited to welcome a number of local authors who will be participating in the Race for Reading. Watch for their name tags and RUN WITH A WRITER! They will also be available to sign books & visit with you after the race. We will introduce them to you here, so you will be ready to meet them on June 9th!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author and illustrator Fay A. Klingler is an award-winning creative and technical writer. An often sought-after motivational speaker for women's groups and radio and television audiences, her expertise includes women’s issues, betrayal recovery, and successful grandparenting. Her previous publications include Shattered: Six Steps from Betrayal to Recovery; Daughter's of God, You Have What It Takes; The LDS Grandparents’ Idea Book; My Magnificent Mountain; The Complete Guide to Woman's Time; Our New Baby; and A Mother's Journal.

Fay’s most recent book is receiving five-star reviews—A Woman’s Power: Threads that Bind Us to God. As is evident from this publication, one of her loves is her Christian faith. However, she also thoroughly enjoys her speaking and writing, along with illustrating, sewing, gardening, hiking, and camping.

Together, Larry and Fay Klingler have twelve children and thirty-five grandchildren in their blended family. They reside in Draper, Utah.

Fay loves to hear from her readers. You can send her an e-mail at fay@klingler.com, or visit her website at www.fayklingler.com or her facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/FayKlingler.

On the wall of my office hangs framed embroidery I did when I was a young girl. It reads, “Greet the day with a song. Make others happy. Serve gladly.” Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? And as a young girl, I thought life would be like that—if I put on a smile, happily served others, and did my part, all would go well for me. Funny how complicated life can become. . . Often even with our best intentions and work our personal life’s movie doesn’t seem to play out as expected. Thank goodness we always have an ally, a supporter—our Heavenly Father.

One of my favorite quotes in my newest book, A Woman’s Power: Threads that Bind Us to God, comes from my earthly father. He said, “It doesn’t matter what happens to you. What matters is how you react to what happens to you.”

Even though life for me has not been as easy as that framed embroidery saying might imply, between my mom and dad’s sound teachings and my Heavenly Father’s support I’ve been really blessed. I have a saintly husband and a wonderful family. Life is good! And I’m excited to have the opportunity to contribute what I’ve learned to my readers by giving to the Saratoga Springs literacy cause.

I’m going to enjoy walking/running with you in the Saratoga Springs Race for Reading. I hope you’ll say hello and encourage me along as you pass me on the trail!

Fay is donating Shattered: Six Steps from Betrayal to Recovery to the Saratoga Springs Library and A Woman’s Power: Threads that Bind Us to God as a prize for the drawing. Thank you, Fay!
